Who Was Chipeta
In 1843, Chipeta (White Singing Bird) was born to the Tabaguache (Uncompahgre) Ute Tribe in what is now Conejos, Colorado. Chipeta would eventually become a trusted advisor and confidant to her husband, Chief Ouray of the Tabaguache Ute Tribe.
Chipeta was known as an Indian Rights Advocate, Diplomat, and Peacekeeper. She died in 1924 in Utah and eventually her remains were moved to the grounds of the Ute Museum in Montrose, Colorado, where Ouray and Chipeta lived from 1874-1880.
